The Earth, April 20, 2009

Begin by singing the Hello Song.

Book: I Love Our Earth by Bill Martin Jr.

Song: Sabes Flores Cultivar from the CD Cada Niño by Tish Hinojosa. We had the kids follow along with actions for this one, planting flowers with their hands, feet, elbows and foreheads.

¿Sabes coles cultivar?
A la moda, a la moda,
¿sabes coles cultivar
a la moda del lugar?
Las cultivan con el pie,
a la moda, a la moda,
la cultivo con el pie,
a la moda del lugar.

(Se repite varias veces cambiando la
palabra pie por ojo, mano, dedo, etc.)

Book: All in a Day by Cynthia Rylant.

Book: We're Going on a Bear Hunt by Michael Rosen. We asked all the kids to stand up and go on a bear hunt with us for this one. The kids joined us in swish swishing through the grass, splashy splashing through the stream and etc., etc. To make this one bilingual we translated a few key words throughout the book.

Grass = Pasto
River = Rio
Mud = Barro
Forest = Bosque
Snowstorm = Tormenta de nieve
Cave = Cueva
Nose = Nariz
Ears = Orejas
Eyes = Ojos
Door = Puerta

Book: Ten Things I Can Do to Help My Earth by Melanie Walsh.

Activity: He's Got the Whole World in His Hands. We played Raffi's version of the song from Raffi in Concert while we bounced a globe ball on a parachute. It was a ton of fun!
